I have my Velop systems in bridge mode on ethernet backhaul. I noticed that the 5G High band always use the same channels. Are the channels fixed? It would be so nice to have true dual band where the second 5G band can be changed! Can this be changed? The 5GHz channels aren't fixed, but in my experience the channel finder doesnt do a very good job at adapting to an environment.

The second 5 GHz band is reserved. During initial setup, the second 5 GHz band acts as a wireless backhaul.

After setup, once you have placed the Child node to your desired location and use wired backhaul, the second 5 GHz cannot be used. It is reserved by design and can never be used or accessed. This is also what I found in my testing, it either makes the higher OR lower 5GHz band available for client connections, but never both. I presume working on the assumption that although this node itself has a wired backhaul, it may have to provide a wireless backhaul for another node in the mesh at some point in the future in the event of a topology change or someone adding a new node sort of makes sense.

Agreed - if you're running wired backhaul exclusively everywhere at that point you probably dont need a mesh, just a better way of managing cluster AP configs. I guess they have to accomodate a mix of scenarios without needing people to individually configure each node keeping it simple for the masses and all that!

Clients that are closer to the node can get away with a lower power connection to the local node, so its a question of where you want to focus the available power and higher bandwidth my vote would be the backhaul. Higher power radios on the AP dont necessarily equate to faster connections to the client, especially if they're mobile devices as they can receive the stronger signal at a greater distance but dont have the power to generate the reciprocal signal back desktops etc being the exception here.

Thats why the general rule of thumb is to have more low-power AP's spread around, ratherh than one big high power one in the middle. My setup is pretty much in-the-middle - my nodes are more or less the same equi-distant layout so they run equally as well on either band when I let it auto-select, but in some circumstances I can see you would need to tweak it for optimum performance including pushing those clients to the higher power band if there isn't room or need to add a full node.

It's been displaying three nodes on a six-node system as down for hours, even though all three are definitely connected and the app shows them as connected also. What you are actually seeing here is still the wireless backhaul speeds not the wired. Wired is just Gigabit, so we do not report on it or run a speed test.

When you run the sysinfo script it will perform this connectivity test even if you are wired.
