These are available in numerous designs to buy. If, however, you want to dare special, individual forms or simply want to build something yourself, then you can make a silicone mold without much effort. In this article we will show you how to make silicone molds for resin yourself.
For working with epoxy resinthe resin and a corresponding hardener are the basic requirements. Depending on which project you want to devote yourself to, other materials such as different color pigments will be added. Often polished silicone molds are also needed. There are practically no limits to creativity when it comes to shaping: Cubes, balls, pyramids, stars, hearts, flowers, coasters and all kinds of figures. Anything is possible and can be filled with epoxy resin to create beautiful works of art or gifts.
In the form of your choice you give the finished epoxy resin mixture. Either we use the mixture crystal clear, or colored with liquid colors or pigments. You can then add various elements such as glitter, stones, shells, flowers, etc. After hardening, carefully remove your finished work from the mold. Due to the fact that it acts as a release agent, silicone is ideally suited as a material for casting molds.
The finished resin objects can be easily removed from the mold after curing due to the flexibility of the silicone. Another advantage is that silicone is considered non-toxic. The fact that it is used as a common material in the production of baking molds or even pacifiers proves that this material is completely harmless. In addition, almost no allergies to silicone are known to date.
There is already a very large selection of ready-to-use silicone molds on the market. Especially beginners of this technique can fall back on baking molds made of silicone or polished silicone molds made especially for working with resin. If you are interested in ready-made silicone molds for epoxy resin casting, here are our recommendations:. However, a disadvantage of many of these silicone molds especially baking molds is that the load on the material is extremely high when working with epoxy resin.A wide variety of things can be used as molds for resin.
One of my favourite mold types is the mold I create myself with cookie cutters, rubber texture tiles made for working with clay, and Silly Putty. With these three simple things, you can make a variety of shapes with a very unique look. The masque and heart were cast on one day, the other three were cast on a later day. As odd as it may seem, the best cookie cutters for this technique are metal. Cookie cutters with simple shapes are easier to use. Small openings, lots of tight bends, internal voids, and other intricate shapes are possible to use but are more difficult both to seal and then to remove the cured resin.
Warning: If you use an item in resin casting never use it for food later. Get two sets of the cookie cutters if you also want to have cookies in those shapes.

A texture tile is basically a large rubber stamp. The texture tiles I have are grey rubber and made for working with polymer or precious metal clay. The best kind of texture tile is one with deep impressions and wide openings.
Thin delicate lines may not allow the resin to flow into all the cavities or may trap bubbles.

This makes them less suitable for Cookie Cutter Casting. Tip: If you have a tile or stamp you want to try with this technique, to see if it will work with resin, pour a small amount of resin on the back, the unpatterned side, and let it cure.
If you can peel the resin off easily, it should work with resin. I have a couple eggs of Silly Putty I bought at the drug store or grocery store. Super Clear resin is a 2-part epoxy resin with ratio. For me, this time, it was my good friend, M, who was celebrating a milestone birthday. With some brainstorming, I came up with an idea to make a resin bowl with uncut Peridot stones.
Peridot is the August birthstone, which is when my friend M was born. One problem…I had never worked with resin before. As in, never ever. But the more I thought about this imaginary resin bowl the more I fell in love with the idea. It would be crystal clear and shiny on the outside. Seriously, this is how my mind works, but I was motivated! One huge issue I ran into was finding a pre-made resin mold for my bowl that would match the image I had created in my imagination.
There was no getting around it, I was going to have to make my own silicone mold. You can tell from the photo the top of the smaller mold sits much lower than the top of the larger one. I wanted to make a resin bowl the size and height of the outer mold and that meant the inner mold had to sit up higher so both edges were even.
I came up with the idea to pour a shallow resin base in the large mold first. That would give me a solid platform on which to set the inner mold and would elevate the inner mold so the edges would be even. Clever, huh?! Spoiler alert: It worked like a charm! To figure out how much resin I should pour in the bottom of the mold, I poured some dry uncooked rice in the bottom of the larger mold and I set the smaller mold on top of the rice and checked the height.
I repeated that step until the inner mold was at the height I wanted it. When I felt the height was right, I removed the inner mold and poured the rice into a clear mixing cup. The amount of resin I would need to mix was approximately the same volume as the rice in the cup. I marked the level of the rice on the cup with a sharpie. Then I made another mark on the cup at exactly half of that amount.
