During Year 7, the first year at the school, students follow an Integrated Learning curriculum which teaches students to focus on their GRIT skills for the majority of their lesson time at school. Each half term is dedicated to a 'Know Zone', and is designed to prepare students for the remainder of their education and further lives. Throughout KS3, students follow a broad curriculum, with the academic subjects and the arts.
The school used to make their students take English Literature in Year 10 and English Language the next year to help the students focus and prepare for their upcoming GCSEs, although this has been discontinued as of recent. Personal Development and Games are also taken by all students, although these subjects are not examined.
However, the school no longer runs AS level qualifications and instead requires students to choose four A Level subjects, dropping one subject within the first month of Sixth Form education. As the newest member of Saltash Town Council, having been successful at interview for co-option less than 2 months ago, I am excited to be joining this vibrant and forward-thinking council looking to promote and invest in Saltash.
I have been living in Saltash sincehaving moved from Kent, where much of my family remain. I enjoy returning as often as possible, to also show my continued support for the Kent Spitfires Cricket Team. Over these years I have seen North Ward change and grow significantly and believe it is important to maintain and develop a close connection with the businesses and residents in this area with the town as whole and would look to ensure opportunities for improved transport and communication are created.
During my time in Saltash I have been lucky enough to become a Cub Scout Leader and am passionate about creating opportunities for the young people in the community.
I also work in the town and am an active member of local business networking groups and look to encourage the growth of business relationships within Saltash and the greater community, as well as to demonstrate the strength and diversity of businesses with the Town. It would be great to see Saltash develop as a town, creating opportunities for the community in the arts, education and employment and flourish as the first town and gateway to Cornwall.
My husband who runs his own business and myself, newly retired from my own business, have lived in Saltash for 28 years, a place we call home.
I would truly like to make a difference to our future. Saltash Council is now a multi-million pound business, with so much being handed over by Cornwall Council, e. As a supporter and new volunteer at Livewire youth project, I feel it is imperative to get support for our youngsters and to encourage involvement in local projects. One of the things I enjoy in my spare time is singing with Rock Choir, supporting local events and charity functions.
I am also in training to walk a full marathon through the night in London for Breast Cancer causes. Work brought me to Plymouth 36 years ago, Jean, our 3 boys and I set up home in Saltash as we decided it was the place to be. My job was in Devonport where I worked in the facilities design group, managing site services. I also joined the Mayfair committee organising the half marathon amongst other events.
Following medical advice to give up marathons and eventually all running, I became aware of a vacancy on the Town Council and I was co-opted in Then re-elected in and I also had the honour of being elected Mayor in Since my time on the council representing North Ward, I have taken particular interest in Pilmere, as well as being the chair of the Policy and Finance committee, the Burial Authority and a member of the Library project, the Station and Waterfront groups. I am also a member of Saltash Rotary Club which enables me to provide charitable service to the town as a whole.
I am passionate about making our town the best place to live and will look back at what we have achieved in my 10 years on the council and be proud. Married to Pete with one son and two stepsons, plus two dogs who rule the household completely! Born and educated in Cornwall I started my working life at a local estate agents in Liskeard. Moving on from there to being one of the first female insurance agents in the country. Next was a move to Nationwide and then onto a property developer progressing to Area Manager.
When the company was taken over I decided to take redundancy and go into business with my husband Pete and we now run our own carpet and underlay business in Saltash.
Having been in business in the area for a number of years I joined Saltash Rotary Club becoming their President in I was recognised by the Club for my work within the charity in by being created a Paul Harris Fellow.
Having seen my husband join Saltash Town Council and enjoying his involvement in local matters I decided to stand as a candidate in I was elected unopposed and have gone on to become a member of several committees including being Chair of the Personnel committee, a role which I enjoy immensely. Sarah Martin is a Mum of two young children, and has lived in Saltash since She volunteers for various event committees in the town including Mayfair Committee and Saltash Regatta and Waterside Festival, and is a member of the Saltash Chamber of Commerce and the Twinning Association.
She has spent much time living abroad, speaks German as a second language, and has a keen interest in mental and physical health issues in our community as well as a passion to help form a vision for the future of Saltash high street.
