Unfortunately after many a time waister I have decided that after a month with no car I think I should get it fixed and then either keep it or sell it fixed. Obviously this will be pricey so I would like some advice. Do people think it is best to get just an engine rebuild from a VW specialist, or should I buy and engine on eBay from a car being broken for spares and get that fitted?

Or is the latter too risky? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'd look at the cost of both and what guarantees you'd have after it's fitted. Who's to say the one you buy on eBay won't have any problems? If it's rebuilt you'll have a car with an engine backed up my a guarantee for a period. I would say it would probably be much cheaper to just get a second hand replacement engine and get a garage to fit it.

They can check the chain tensioner in 2 minutes with the new engine out of the car and fit the revised tensioner fairly quickly also if one hasn't already been done. Do you know what I should check for if I'm to buy one second hand? I don't really know anything about engines, which makes me think I'm probably not the best person to go and buy one.

Also, this may seem a stupid question. I can't imagine it means anything else but you will obviously have to travel to them so may work out rather expensive if you have to get it recovered there. One that you can get delivered to a local garage will almost certainly be the cheaper option.

I don't often support honestjohn, but second hand engines is a dangerous game to play so much rubbish out there. And don't go on price, go find someone that is trusted to do it right. And you can verify that they are decent at it. Yes, you may find a good one and it'll be great, and cheap, but you may also find a horror that is burning oil heavily or has other issues or nicked I am afraid it's a more expensive way to fix the problem, but it's a safer one. Have a question? It was towed to a VW dealer who eventually advises that there is no compression on any cylinder and is unsure what may have caused the problem - maybe timing belt? He advises it may well be that the only solution is a new engine. Is this fault common in Golfs, GTI or otherwise? Is there conceivably another solution that avoids the no-doubt huge expense of a new engine? And if there is no other solution, is it worth asking VW for a goodwill contribution? If it has all been serviced properly - by VW - then your chances of goodwill should be reasonable, at least.

But bear in mind that VW will be the most expensive place to get the work done.

Technical Details

My commiserations. I once had a very unsettling experience where my Passat cut out whilst overtaking a lorry. Nearly killed my family of 4. Roadside assistance advised that it was probably the timing belt so I had it recovered to VW dealership. Even though the timing belt has been changed atmiles and the failure was atmiles, they blamed the auxiliary belt having wrapped itself around some other component and caused the timing belt to slip.

There were other factors which I won't go into here but I still have my doubts about the precise cause. It was the early 2. Perhaps yours is similar? My instinct would be caution about going with the main dealer. Get a second independent opinion if you can. Even components used by an independent are covered by the VW two-year guarantee if they fail again.

Good luck. My suggestion is to drive away from that place of lunacy with your car on a trailer as quickly as possible making the sign of the cross with your fingers in their direction, and as above, let a mechanic have a good poke nose and see what he can come up with.

After new year I am looking at giving my Golf GTI an engine rebuild - new seals, rings and just a general cleanup as she's now reached k, a tad smokey under full throttle and has a bit of an oil drinking habit, so I think it's time to give the old girl a bit of tlc and strip down and rebuild the engine and return it to former glory Engine info, it's a cc 8 valve with the digifant injection system if that makes any difference to the rebuild?

So far I have started pricing up; Full cylinder head gasket kit - incl valve stem oil seals, cam seals, HG etc. I know it's a few weeks off yet but I will be posting pictures up as I progress! Is there anything else I should know or have missed off? I am also looking just to do a standard rebuild - no power tuning! Cheers, Rik. MJK 24 5, posts months. Your smoke and oil consumption will likely be the valve stem oil seals.

I'd get new valve guides fitted and obviously change the valve stem oil seals too. To be honest, if the bores look ok, I wouldn't touch the bottom end. A friend did k in a Scirocco GTX without touching the bottom end. If you are going the whole hog and take the engine out, I'd change the crank oil seals at both ends and the coreplugs as any of these will be a pain in the ass with the engine in the car.

To be honest I'm very, very tempted to go the whole way and take the engine out, take everything apart and give it a damn good clean before rebuilding with fresh parts! Juat thinking it will seem a very satisfying job having a near factory fresh, clean engine!

I wasnt entirely sure if the smoke would be down to the valve stems though as it doesn't smoke on start up just in the higher rev band or when giving a good caning and double declutching - makes epic smoke clouds appear - more likely, to be piston rings right? Maybe a new water pump while you're there? Seems rude not to Obviously there will be extra costs but if you're going to that much trouble why not upgrade?

Searider posts months. New rings might be sufficient but if the bores are also worn you might be looking at a rebore and oversize pistons? It will give you full indication of the reason for the smoke. First thing to do before a strip down is a compression test. OR find a mk3 golf 16v donor car and rebuild the ABF. Thanks everyone for your comments! Really helpful! Basically as I stated first I don't want to see a performance gain out of this, I just want to rebuild the 8v engine as factory fresh and like new - they were good engines brand new and I don't think the past 21 years, 9 owners and k miles have been as sympathetic towards this engine, as although it still feels quick for what it is, it doesn't quite have the same punch as a younger engine with less miles, and the oil burning issue is driving me nuts!

It's not leaking either I did sort that out lol! The 2. I thi I it will be quite educational and the feeling will be good once I've done it Rik. Who are you insured with? Advice wanted: 2. Location Boston, MA.

VW GTI MK6 (2010 - 2014)

Story: Engine has 98k miles on it and the cam chain tensioner, cam chain, and exhaust cam sprocket all broke, not sure what cause what to fail but all 3 parts are in pieces.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioners, t-stat all replaced about 3k ago at 95k miles Engine damage is unknown, currently in my driveway. I am debating on whether to just get a brand new engine for about 4k or rebuild my existing one for around the same budget. I would hate to spend 4k rebuilding an engine only to have something else go wrong down the line.

Having said that, if your budget for either course of action is 4k, why not get a new motor and sell the HPFP, K03 and injectors, and put that towards upgrading just your rods in a brand new engine?
